A Credit Card Guide For Students

May 13th, 2008 TomTessin Posted in Finances | No Comments »

When you apply for a credit card for the first time, there are probably a lot of things you’re not familiar with and even though you’re probably in a boat with a million other students, there are things you need to know when you use your credit card for the first time. Even if you haven’t applied for a credit card for the first time, there are a few things you need to look out for.

The APR

The APR or otherwise known as the annual percentage rate is the rate that’s going to applied to your unpaid balance. Every time you don’t pay off your bill in full, you’re going to be charged this rate. This is why I can’t stress enough that you pay your bill off in full. You can’t treat your credit card like a piece of plastic that’s like free money. If you have this mindset, I would highly advise you stay away.

The annual fee

With most first time credit cards, you’ll find that most of them don’t have an annual fee but it is something you’re going to want to look out for. An annual fee is a fee that the credit card companies are going to charge you regardless of how much you use the card. This fee can range anywhere from a dollar and on. There are so many cards on the market; I would recommend you get a card that doesn’t have an annual fee.

Intro Rates / Balance Transfers

Sometimes when you look for a credit card for the first time, you may find that they are offering a teaser rate. Let’s say for example, that you’re looking at a cash back credit card. Some companies may offer the double cash back for the first thirty days. Some people would glance right over this thirty day period and think that they are getting this rate for the length of this card. Make sure that you know exactly what rates you’re getting for the life of the card.

The rewards

I think the rewards are one of the most important parts of the card that you can really capitalize on. One of the main reasons people get credit cards are just for the rewards. You’re going to have to remember that if you don’t pay your bill off in full, you’re not going to be able to take advantage of the rewards. Rewards out there range anywhere from cash back to a point based system. This all depends on what you want.

These topics that I just mentioned are the main points that you’re going to want to know about when it comes down to your credit card. An easy way to see what your card offers is to either look at the terms and conditions the card carrier gives you or to check the card information online. As long as you as know what your card is about and you’re responsible, you shouldn’t have troubles with your credit card.

Getting Rid Of Mildew On Your Roses

May 13th, 2008 K.Finch Posted in Gardening | No Comments »

Mildew is every gardener’s worst nightmare, especially those who have rose bushes. The most known and most common mildew that effects rose bushes is one known as sphaerotheca pannosa. This type of mildew is powdery. The mildew is usually a white or grey powder that is usually found on rose bush leaves, shoots, buds, and the petals. Once the mildew attacks the plant, it spreads very easily and a gardener will soon notice white patches on the rose bush. The fungus eventually sucks all of the nutrients and water from the leaves, which in turn kills the leaves. The leaves eventually shrivel up and fall off of the bush completely.

The common powdery mildew is not caused by free water on the rose bush’s leaves and other parts; instead the mildew lives and thrives on hot, arid weather. In fact, watering your rose bush in the afternoon will help rid of some of the powdery mildew because it will break up the spores that are released by the mildew during the daytime. If you can afford to purchase fungicides, they are also helpful in getting rid of mildew. However, the fungicide will only be effective if you apply it at the right time.

Another type of mildew that is common on rose bushes is the Peronospora sparsa fungus. This fungus causes downy mildew, which opposite of powdery mildew, lives in a moist and humid environment. The mildew is usually found under the leaves of the rose bush. If you think your rose bush has been infected with a downy mildew, look for red, purple, or brown spots on the leaves. This usually ends in the leaves turning yellow and then falling off of the bush.

Unfortunately, this type of mildew is not as easily controlled as powdery mildew. Fungicides have not proven to be helpful; however, routine rose bush pruning increases air circulation, which then reduces humidity surrounding the plant. Regular seasonal pruning is very important to the health of your rose bush.

If you cannot afford to purchase fungicides to get rid of mildew, or you just prefer not to use them, there are a few simple steps that you can follow to reduce the chance of your rose bush becoming infected.

1. Before you plant your rose bushes, be sure that they are all spaced. Hybrid teas should have at the least, 3 ft. distances and bigger bushes should be no closer than 4 ft. Keeping the plants farther away from each other allows them all to dry out quicker after you water them. Lingering water can cause and attract mildew, so spacing is important. Also be sure that your rose bush is receiving enough sunlight. Rose bushes that do not get enough sunlight will have thin leaves that can be easily taken over by mildew.

2. Prune until you can’t prune anymore! This is probably the easiest and most important. Prune whenever your bush needs it. That means year round, not just during the growing season. Pruning your rose bush prevents mildew from forming because the plant is able to receive enough air and sunlight that is spread evenly throughout the plant helps prevent mildew. Pruning a rose bush is very easy. During pruning season, prune your rose bush by cutting above the new buds. This ensures that the new growth will be pointed outward instead of inward. It is also important to take time to inspect your rose bush to keep an eye out for any forming mildew. If you spot any dead or infected parts of the bush, simply remove it and then throw it out in a sealed container so the mildew does not spread.

3. When you water your roses, water them carefully. To prevent the growth of mildew, water your plants at root level. This is most important when it is hot outside. Avoid getting water on the leaves, especially if you water your plants shortly before it is nighttime. If you do not water your rose bush at root level, the plant will become dehydrated, which is a trigger of mildew.

4. To save money and time, try this home remedy for rose bushes. Many gardeners, both old and new, use the stinging nettle. This spray is easy and quick to make. All you have to do is collect stinging nettle, put them in a sack, and crush the leaves. Then put the sack in water and let it sit in a warm environment for about a week or so. Then strain the water and dilute it with water. Use this liquid and spray it on your rose bushes every two weeks. It is sure to keep mildew away. If you do not have stinging nettle, you can make a similar spray with these simple directions:

You will need:

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil

• 1 gallon of water

• 1 tsp regular-flavored Listerine

• 1 tbsp liquid soap

• 1

Hybrid Tea Roses – Developing A Great Understanding

May 13th, 2008 K.Finch Posted in Gardening | No Comments »

From Teas, Grandifloras, Hybrids, and Floribundas, you’ll find that there is a very vast world of roses, and there are so many different types, that even gardeners who are experienced may find it confusing. So, what are hybrid tea roses? Well, basically they are created by crossing the China Tea rose with a Hybrid Perpetual, which is a European rose.

Usually the roses that you see in windows of florist shops right before Valentines Day are hybrid tea roses. These are the images that most people have when they think of classic roses. They usually have rather large blooms, and for each stem, there is only one rose produced. These blooms unfold with large petals that look like velvet and come out in a variety of layers. They are often favorites of people who enjoy cutting long stemmed roses to display in their homes. Also, photographers love to photograph them as well, since there are many colors available and the petals look wonderful. Since they flower on a regular basis, usually hybrid tea roses are known as monthly roses or even ever blooming roses.

Back in the middle of the 19th century, the hybrid tea roses became very popular. In fact, they became the most popular rose to have in the rose garden. During the Victorian era there was a lot of experimentation done with these roses, using cross pollinization and it resulted in hybridized tea roses. The breeders during this time were working to bring perpetual flower roses together with a rose that looked beautiful and elegant, and they definitely achieved their goal when they started propagating hybrid tea roses. Putting the Hybrid Perpetual and Tea rose together was a great combination.

The first official hybrid tea rose was known as the “la France.” It was discovered to a Frenchman in 1867, known as Giullot. In fact, they actually think that his discovery of this rose was accidental. He was working to create a yellow rose that was large and bright, but accidentally came up with a rose that was silvery-pink that had bright pink tips. It was a very fragrant and large flower for the time. With the beautiful colors and the huge blooms, the La France was definitely the star of the era.

Through time, hybrid tea roses continued to become more and more popular. With their long stem, it was easy to see the blooms and easy to cut as well. People loved their beautiful, vivid colors and the unfurling buds were so elegant that many people found them so much more beautiful and dramatic than any other roses. Also, the blooms they produced were bigger and they produced more frequently as well, making them quite popular.

Today most of the time hybrid tea roses are grown for the purpose of using them for cut flowers. During the Victorian Era they were prominently used for landscaping, but today they are not so common in this way. However, you can add them to your garden if you want to. If you choose to plant a hybrid tea rose in your rose garden, here are some tips that will help you find the right rose for your garden.

-Tip #1 – Are you looking for a rose that smells wonderful? If so, then these hybrid tea roses may not be the right choice. You’ll find that usually they only have a very light scent.

-Tip #2 – If you are looking for a low maintenance rose, this is probably not the right choice. During the hot summer months, hybrid tea roses need to be watered frequently. If you don’t have time to water on a regular basis, then these roses may not be for you.

-Tip #3 – Looking for long stemmed huge blooms that you can cut and display? If so, then hybrid tea roses will be just the thing. However, if you are looking for roses for landscaping, you’ll probably want to go with climbing roses or perhaps Grandifloras.

-Tip #4 – If you don’t want to deal with many thorns, you’ll want to pick a different rose. You see, hybrid tea roses are known for their thorns. While there are a few thornless hybrid tea roses out there, they are often quite expensive and can be hard to find.

Credit Card Holders, Beware!

May 13th, 2008 BradlleyMckoy Posted in Finances | No Comments »

No modern man should be caught dead without a credit card, but credit card holders beware. There are more disadvantages to owning that strip of plastic than living without it because once you’ve missed a credit card payment, you’re done in. Here’s how to avoid the trap of getting the reverse Midas touch.

Pay Or Borrow As You Go?

The lure of credit cards is irresistible. You have the purchasing power in sticky situations - paying an emergency bill or renting a car. You can have your card swiped anywhere and anytime. Credit card holders also have the edge of making purchases with companies that only accept credit card payments.

With a credit card, you can go anywhere in the globe and have dinner or cocktails in a ritzy resto-bar without having to worry about paying in exact denomination. But this privilege is not without responsibilities.

Credit card holders should be aware that their credit cards should not create debt, but pave the way for them to have good credit. If you are mulling the idea of getting multiple credit cards, think twice before submitting yourself to a life of delayed payment fees, surcharges, and transaction fees for the singular irresponsible act of paying your credit card purchases late.

Late payments automatically accrue interest that creates insurmountable debt and bang goes your credit worthiness. When it comes to credit cards, it’s a matter of self-restraint and responsibility because not everybody can manage their credit card debts well. Others fare better in pay as you go, rather than swipe their credit cards anytime they please.

Choose a Credit Card Wisely

Ordinarily, when you go shopping for a new pair of shoes, you look for style, comfort, and affordability. It is the same with credit cards. You have the option to choose a credit card that is suited to your needs.

Take the time to compare credit card offers. Watch out for those low or teaser interest rates during the honeymoon period before the axe falls. For teaser rates, it takes about six months before reality sets in. Also, compare the annual rates that may eat any savings you could have otherwise enjoyed from the low rates at the start.

Seasoned credit card holders know that there are cards that have the same rates, but one will have no annual fee. So fine-tune your search for a credit card that will not charge you steep fines and surprise you with hidden fees.

To enjoy the privileges offered to credit card holders, pay your dues on time, and eventually, you can request to lower your Annual Percentage Rate or APR, enjoy the rewards, and other deals that may crop up. Find out, too, if the credit card company charges a variable or fixed rate.

If You Are Not Careful

Here’s the scenario if you take your credit cards lightly. You’ll be overwhelmed with the interest rates that’ll be the stuff of your nightmares. Consider this - the credit card companies can change the rules anytime they feel the urge. They can just raise your interest rate any time you are late in paying your bills. The credit card companies charges punitive interest as much as 30% for $100 you have neglected to pay.

Before you get a credit card, know how credit card holders cope with identity theft or stolen credit cards.

How To Prune Rose Bushes Properly

May 13th, 2008 K.Finch Posted in Gardening | No Comments »

Once winter ends and the spring moves in, dedicated gardeners dig out their gardening tools and get ready for the new season full of roses. Many of these gardeners grab their shears and put on gloves and set out to their garden to prune their rose bushes. Pruning rose bushes allows for the new buds to bloom in spring. Since rose bushes go dormant, depending on where you live, you may be able to prune your rose pushes before spring. For example, if you live in a warmer climate, you can prune your rose bushes in the fall.

As any gardener should do, take the time to get to know your plants. Gardeners who are planning to prune their rose bushes should figure out what kind of roses they have. Every rose bush is different from the next. The main purpose of pruning a rose bush is to remove and reduce parts of the bush overall. These parts can be pruned off because they are unnecessary. Getting rid of these unneeded pieces will allow more air to flow to the bush as well as more sun distribution. Both of these factors will keep the plant healthy which leads to more beautiful blooms of roses.

New to pruning? No problem. Follow these five straightforward and simple steps and before you know it your rose bush will be pruned to perfection. No matter what kind of rose bush you have, these techniques are sure to work for every single type.

1. Before you begin to prune your rose bush, make sure you have a sharp and effective pair of hand shears. To begin, cut away the dead wood and remove any canes that are broken or damaged. If you are not sure as to what good and bad wood is, know that live wood is usually a greenish color and dead wood is usually black or a dark brown color. Living wood will be white inside. The importance of getting rid of dead canes is that it prevents any sort of disease or manifestation to spread to other parts of the plant. Pieces of wood that are thin should also be gotten rid of to promote the growth of healthier canes.

2. The next step is to prune. Make sure that all of your pruning cuts are made just above the buds, usually around

Get Ready For Your Credit To Get Tightened Up!

May 13th, 2008 Nocita Posted in Finances | No Comments »

That’s right! Right now we are facing a record level of homes in foreclosure, declining home values, increased unemployment, increased interest rates on credit cards, and more scrutinizing of home loan applications by lenders. Heck, you may already be facing these problems right now!

Home values in certain parts of the United States continue to decline. The subprime mess has created a record number of home owners who are unable to make their loan payments. This is due to the acceleration of their loan payment based on their adjustable interest rates changing the amount of payment they would be making on their loan. In many cases this leaves the homeowner with the inability to make their payment placing them in a financial bind. It’s gotten so bad that some lenders with the urging of our government, are trying to assist some homeowners in negotiating a better loan payment to make their payment more affordable. Some homeowners may qualify for these particular programs provided by lenders. However, other homeowners will not qualify for these programs leaving them in a financial bind and with the possibility of losing their home.

Did you know that in the midst of the problems we are currently having, that if you have home equity line of credit, you may be stopped from using your line of credit by your lender! That’s right, the line of credit you have, may not be available to you. Some lenders have tightened up credit so much that they have decided for some homeowners they will either hold, suspend or reduce their line of credit. So if you have a home equity line of credit you may want to take a look at following up with your lender if you are concerned whether or not this will affect you.

Have you noticed whether or not the interest rates for your credit cards have increased? If your interest rate has changed you may want to contact your credit card company to find out why your interest rate has increased. If your rate has been increased by your credit card company, see if you can get the company to reduce your rate. Just keep in mind that you may be more successful in doing this if you make your payments timely and you maintain good credit. It is also important to ensure that you pay all of your bills on time. In some instances, your interest rate for your credit cards may increase if you do not pay your other bills on time. Beware, your creditors are looking at this as well! If you have been paying your bills on time and maintain good credit and your lender refuses to reduce your interest rate, you may want to consider checking other credit card companies interest rates. If you can find a lower rate you may want to consider going with the lower interest rate for that particular credit card company.

Overall, just beware that times are tougher out there and your credit is being looked at more and more by your lenders. Just stay on top of your credit by paying your bills on time, securing all of your credit reports(from the three credit bureaus) annually and communicate with your lender if you are having problems making your payments or need their assistance.

Are The High Gas Prices Eating At Your Wallet?

May 13th, 2008 Nocita Posted in Finances | No Comments »

I don’t know about you, but the continued increase in the cost of gas that we are paying at the gas pump is kicking me where it hurts! What’s that you say? I say in my wallet and I’m sure you may be feeling this same pain as well. I’m sure you’re wondering like me, how high will the gas prices go? Some predict that the fuel prices may escalate to $10.00 or more a gallon at the pump. I don’t know about you, at that point or even possibly sooner the price hitting that level, there is really no point in going to work! You would be probably working to pay for gas to go into your vehicle and virtually nothing else. Most people are average folks just trying to make it in our economy and it would be difficult for them to manage paying high gas prices that continue to go up! As a matter of fact, it may already be difficult for some people. We are already at record level gas prices at the present time. In some places the price for regular unleaded gas is already over $4.00 per gallon and steadily approaching $5.00 per gallon as of this writing. It appears that the future outlook on the gas prices coming down are bleak and the stress on our wallets will continue.

High gas prices impact almost everything we try to do in some form. That’s right, most everything we do we are impacted by the high price we are paying for gas. The higher gas prices eventually trickle down to cost us more in such areas as: food, clothing, airfare, utilities, entertainment, retail products, etc… Just think, we are getting hit left and right with increased fees in these areas due to the high price that we are currently paying for gas and appears will continue to pay for a long period of time. Some think the high gas prices are here to stay. So much for having extra money to spend on other things! We’re going to be busy trying to put the money we have towards gas for our vehicles to get from point A to point B. We’ll be trying to make sure we have enough money to purchase gas to get to work and necessary places we need to go. We find that we really do not have much money left to spend for unnecessary purchases, entertainment or other activities.

What can we do to help ourselves in these hard times while we’re trying to deal with our anxiety and sometimes anger over these extremely high prices we are paying for gas? Here are some tips that you may want to consider to help you cope. You may find that you have already started to make some of these adjustments already:

1) Consider using public transportation if this is something you can realistically do. The modes of public transportation you may consider would be: bus, train and car pooling.

2) If you have a bicycle, consider using this mode of transportation for local short trips if this would be realistic of course.

3) Go to places that are necessary and actually needed. In other words if it is something you want to do and it is not needed, don’t do it. Consider letting your needs supersede your wants to save in your wallet on gas. For example, necessary trips would be: work, school, doctor appointments, etc….

4) Reduce your leisure, entertainment and travel commuting distances. Consider doing more of these activities at home or near your home.

5) Consider purchasing a vehicle if this is within your budget to assist you in reducing the cost you are paying for your overall fuel costs. Look for vehicles that provide higher mpg(miles per gallon) for the freeway and city. You may want to even consider a hybrid vehicle.

6) Slow down! Reduce your speed on the roadways you travel on. This will also assist you in better fuel economy. Put less petal to the metal!

7) Try to make your trips to the places you need to go count. Make a list beforehand of the places you need to travel and consider consolidating your trips. This means instead of making several multiple trips you combine trips(consolidate) by going to the place you need to go along the way and your list will assist you with this. For example, if you need to go to your local grocery store, cleaners and post office, just plan to make one trip instead of three separate trips back and forth from your home. You would take your list and stop at each place you need to along the way and strategically make sure that you plan your stops based on where these particular places are located. This really can work well if you plan your list ahead of time. Just by doing this you can save on gas!

8) Try to locate and compare prices of gas stations in your area to determine who has the lowest price on fuel and consider going there for gas. A good way to do this is when you are driving to the places you need to go, just observe the gas station prices along the way and you will be able to determine which locations have the best prices for your money.

9) Talk to your relatives, friends, neighbors, coworkers and others on the gas stations they are getting their gas from. You can compare with each other on which gas stations have the lowest prices to get your fuel from. You would be helping each other. This is similar to networking.

10) Make sure your tires are property inflated. This can also assist in providing you with better fuel economy.

11) Count from one to ten and try to relax before you start to pump your gas to assist you in relieving your anxiety and stress over the amount of money you will be paying for the gas you are about to put into your vehicle.

Who knows whether or not we may get some relief on the amount of money we’re spending on gas. However, it is unclear if this will happen anytime soon. In the short and long run we must do what we have to do to help ourselves through this major problem that is affecting our wallets. So, do what you can to help yourself and your family to reduce the amount of money you may be spending on gas.

Think Green - Drink Green

May 13th, 2008 MikeBirdsall Posted in Food and Drinks | No Comments »

There’s apple wine, ice wine, corked wine. And yes there is green wine. Not green in color, but green in “good for the environment” green.

I know I know, green is everywhere. But it needs to be everywhere. Green is all about changing your lifestyle to produce less waste and use less resources that damage our environment. So if you are going to enjoy wine, why not enjoy it with Green in mind? I’m not saying drink less, just be green while drinking.

Here’s how; drink wine from wineries that are green, use glassware and other wine products that are eco-friendly, and of course recycle those wine bottles.

Because wine is an agricultural product people think wineries are environmentally friendly. What’s better for the environment than rows and rows of vines? Surprise. Vineyards can have a negative impact on the surrounding eco-system, from deforestation issues with planting the vines, to run-off water with pesticides, and of course soil erosion. Fortunately, more and more winemakers are taking steps toward sustainable farming and organic practices. Read more about this at www.matchmywine.com. But finding a winery that is Green is not an easy task.

The number of California wineries that have started sustainable practices has increased 24% since 2004 according to a wine industry progress report.

There are a number of Napa Wineries who are “Napa Green” certified. But this only means that they are friendly to fish. Enrollment in the Napa Green program shows a winery’s serious commitment to enhancing the watershed and restoring habitats with sustainable agriculture practices. Wineries and landowners receive Napa Green certification by participating in the Fish Friendly Farming program - creating a customized farm plan that addresses all aspects of the vineyard and entire property and outlines practices to achieve soil conservation, water conservation, stable drainage, riparian corridor enhancement, fisheries enhancement and long-term improvement and sustainability.

There is also an organization called the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) which promotes the benefits of sustainable winegrowing practices, enlists industry commitment and assists in implementation of the Sustainable Winegrowing Program. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any certification program.

Beringer Vineyards is one of Napa Valley’s most historic wineries and is Napa Green certified. They do everything from developing paths for live animals, creating runoff channels so irrigation water runs away from creeks and water sources, using coverstock in-between vines, mulching many of the clippings and skins back into fertilizer, and using lady bugs for insect control and hawks for bird control.

Use products that are eco-friendly like wine glasses and consider bottles with screw tops. Recycle your wine bottles either in your recycling bin or give them to a local, home winemaker. If you find a good resource for old wine bottles let me know. Don’t forget to bring your own boxes with you on your wine tours. And bring those reusable bags in with you to the wine shop – all that brown paper bags just gets tossed out in the trash.

So use a recycled wine glass and enjoy some Clos Du Green. It’s the right thing to do. Green IS the new Black.

Mike Birdsall writes for both http://www.matchmywine.com and http://www.getmyworldgreen.com. He enjoys food and wine pairing and helping the environment. He also owns Birdsall Interactive, an Oakland based web design firm.

Lasagna Recipes

May 13th, 2008 AnaMaria Posted in Food and Drinks | No Comments »

The main lasagna recipes are those with tomato and besciamella sauce. Lasagna is only another shape of pasta and so, it also matches with an infinity of seasonings.

Among all lasagne recipes, the number one should be the most traditional one. Before preparing it, it’s necessary to have already a tomato meat sauce and a besciamella ready to use.

A good tomato meat sauce needs good ingredients, as they contribute strongly for the best final result.

You’ll need (4 people):

• 4 spoons of extra virgin olive oil

• 200 gr of ground veal meat (instead of ground, it can be minced too)

• 2 cans of peeled tomatoes

Life Insurance Proceeds - Managing Your Windfall

May 12th, 2008 DonaldLusan Posted in Finances | No Comments »

Your spouse dies and you are aware that s/he had a sizable life insurance policy. You welcome your new acquired wealth but you are not certain how to handle it. For someone accustomed to handling large sums of money there is no problem but for the average person there is a disturbing uncertainty that doesn’t seem to leave your mind.

I have seen situations where the surviving spouse was so prepared that handling life insurance proceeds was like a walk in the park. On the other hand, I have also seen the good intentions of a loving spouse come to nothing because of the lack of a good plan.

Immediate Expenses

Upon the death of any individual there are certain instant expenses that come into play. You have to consider burial costs, probate costs, attorneys fees etc. Some people have sufficient cash on hand to take care of these things. For those who do not you should prioritize the task of proving the death of your loved one. A death certificate will be of great help. If there is a newspaper clipping of the circumstances of the persons death you should also provide a copy of it to the life insurance company.

You also need to prove that you are the person mentioned as primary beneficiary on the policy. A copy of your birth certificate as well as your marriage certificate will be of great help.

You will find that reputable life insurance companies will work with you and try to get the money into your hands as quickly as possible. If you can get into contact with the agent you will find that s/he will be a great help in expediting things.

How To Take Proceeds

You will need a lump sum to take care of the immediate costs arising from the death of your spouse but you should give serious thought to taking the bulk of the proceeds in the form of an income. If you are uncertain how to do this it is recommended that you use the “interest income” option until you have a chance to really think about what you want to do. The life insurance company will pay you the interest in whatever manner you choose. Your principal will remain in tact.

If the income of the deceased spouse was important to the standard in which you have become accustomed then it may be wise to take the proceeds in the form of a “life income”. You will never outlive it.

If your need for income is a temporary one then you may choose to use a “fixed period income” or a “fixed amount income” for whatever period you desire. Let us suppose you are age 55 when your spouse dies. Let us also suppose that you have a sizable pension that you will receive at age 62. You would then need to take the income you require for 7 years in order to maintain your lifestyle. You take the balance of the life insurance policy proceeds in a lump sum at that time.

There are many other settlement options available. See this page for additional information.
